1863, Pooley Bridge
Restaurant with Rooms,
Ullswater the Lake District

BUILT DURING QUEEN VICTORIA’S REIGN IN 1863

For over 150 years, 1863 has quite literally been a cornerstone of the village. The property is set in the heart of Pooley Bridge, a pretty village on the shores of Ullswater in the Lake District. It was built first as the village blacksmith and later it became the post office.

REIMAGINED FOR THE 21st CENTURY

Now 1863 is more than an award-winning restaurant with seven elegant rooms; we are a family affair who enjoy getting the little things just right, welcoming guests back times and again to share in a slice of Lake District paradise.

Reviews

  • Deserves a Michelin star.

Having eaten here twice we thought the food was so good we wondered how it didn’t have a Michelin star and how could a Michelin star restaurant be better?  So we recently booked a table at the Black Swan in Old stead to see how the 1863 bistro would compare.  Without going into great detail about the meals at each restaurant all I can say is the food at 1863 is every bit as good as the Michelin started Black Swan. - March 2020
  • Excellent Food and Service

Interesting menu and everything well cooked. Beautiful plates of food. My daughter and I enjoyed every morsel. Highly recommend. Staff helpful and very friendly. We had the 3 course dinner at £35. Value for money. - March 2020
  • Fabulous little restaurant

Fantastic place to celebrate my birthday. The restaurant was warm and cosy, the staff provided an excellent service and the food was delicious. The menu is inspiring, portions aren’t huge but certainly adequate. Everything was fresh and cooked to perfection. This is a special little restaurant, I will most certainly be back! - February 2020
  • 3 course Evening Dinner

Thoroughly enjoyed our meal. The food was exceptional, good service and a friendly atmosphere. We had 3 courses for £35pp, we felt this was good value for money, the portion sizes being just right to allow you to enjoy each course and was served with complimentary bread and amuse bouche. - January 2020
