For over 150 years, 1863 has quite literally been a cornerstone of the village. Set in the heart of Pooley Bridge on the shores of Ullswater, it was built first as a blacksmith’s forge, and later became the village post office. In 2016 it opened its doors as 1863 Restaurant with Rooms.

1863 has always been a place of craft, work and utility, shaped for over a century by fire, precision and necessity – values that continue to define us today.

Our story is not about reinvention. It is about continuity – honouring our heritage while allowing it to evolve, quietly and with intent. A restaurant that reflects seasons, cycles and sourcing, with rooms that feel welcoming and warm.
