Our Guests Thoughts
A very special place
I simply can’t speak highly enough of 1863. We stayed as a family of 4 adults in rooms 5 and 6 and had the tasting menu with paired wines on the second evening. You can tell that the owners of this place care about their guests, the attention to detail here makes a huge difference. Most places offer tea/coffee in the rooms but here the tea bags are good quality (tea pigs) and they provide good quality coffee in coffee bags, not just cheap instant coffee. They take an eco friendly approach, refilled locally sourced toiletries, chilled water and milk in refillable flasks, washable makeup remover towel, all fantastic touches. I’ve also never been anywhere where they have a night light installed just next to the toilet in the ensuite so you don’t disturb your partner in the middle of the night. Something I never knew I wanted in my life! Comfortable bed, nicely decorated rooms, good (controllable) temperature, just couldn’t fault it at all.

A really good start
A short break in the Lakes, four restaurants with rooms in four nights. 1863 was the first night. Our room was lovely, large and spotlessly clean. Dinner was very good, and served with a smile. I loved the presentation of the cheese course – everybody should have a cracker casket. One can tell an awful lot about a place by the bread they serve – this was warm, fresh and delicious. Breakfast was excellent – eggs Benedict setting me up nicely for a walk around Derwentwater. Lovely

Another lovely stay
This is the second time we have stayed at 1863 & the second time we have been more than impressed with the way we were looked after. All the staff are absolutely lovely – accommodating & attentive without being overbearing or pretentious. This is the sort of place we stay when we are celebrating something special, so it is a real treat for us, but we were never made to feel as if we weren’t posh enough – the staff are down to Earth but also very professional. We know that several members of the team have worked at 1863 for several years, which to us speaks volumes about the sort of place 1863 is, & l think helps underpin that team feeling (as that is exactly how it felt – everyone worked together, despite their differing roles). The food, just like last time, was absolutely amazing – come on Michelin, where is their star?!We would not hesitate to recommend a stay here to anyone, it is a brilliant place & one to which we hope to return in the future. Having weathered the Covid-storm, it feels they are going from strength to strength, which is well deserved. Thankyou for another wonderful stay!

Luxurious stay
Highly recommend 1863 Bistro, particularly for a special occasion. Our group had rooms 6, 7 and 4 and all were beautiful, especially the two suites (6 & 7). Luxurious fittings throughout, comfy beds, a range of quality toiletries and a coffee maker all added to the comfort. Highly recommended.
